Kweda is a small and quiet town in the Wheatbelt area of Western Australia. It's located about 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of a bigger town called Brookton.

How Kweda Began

The story of Kweda started around 1913. At that time, the government was planning to build a new railway line. This railway would connect the town of Brookton to Kunjin, which is near Corrigin.

One of the planned stops along this new railway was called "Quandadine Siding." This siding was going to be built close to Quandadine Pool, which is part of the Avon River.

Planning the Town

In 1914, a surveyor named Marshall Fox suggested creating a townsite right here. A surveyor is someone who measures and maps land. Later that same year, land was set aside for this new town.

The Railway Arrives

The Brookton to Corrigin railway line officially opened in 1915. By then, the name of the railway stop had changed from Quandadine to Kweda. This new name was then used when the townsite was officially recognized in 1918. When a town is "gazetted," it means its name and boundaries are officially recorded by the government.

What Does Kweda Mean?

The name "Kweda" might come from "Queeda." This is a word from the Noongar language, which is spoken by the Aboriginal people of this area. "Queeda" is the name for the Casuarina tree, a type of tree found in Australia.
