Kwethluk (pronounced KWEETH-luuk) is a small city in the Bethel Census Area of Alaska, United States. In 2020, about 812 people lived there. Kwethluk is known as the birthplace of Saint Olga of Alaska, an important figure in the local community.
Exploring Kwethluk's Location
Kwethluk is located where the Kuskokwim and Kwethluk rivers meet. This area is part of the large Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The rivers here are always changing their paths.
The name Kwethluk comes from the Yupik word kuik, which means "river." It also includes -rrluk, which means "bad" or "unnatural." This name describes the rivers' constantly shifting channels.
The city covers about 11.7 square miles (30.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 10.0 square miles (25.9 square kilometers). The rest, about 1.7 square miles (4.4 square kilometers), is water.

Kwethluk first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1880. Back then, it was called Kuljkhlugamute. It was not listed again until 1940, when it was called "Quithlook." The spelling changed to Kwethluk in 1950. The village officially became a city in 1975.
In 2000, 713 people lived in Kwethluk. There were 153 households, with many families living together. Most of the people living in Kwethluk were Native American.
Many households in Kwethluk had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 4 to 5 people. The median age of people in the city was around 20 years old. This means many young people live in Kwethluk.
Education in Kwethluk
Students in Kwethluk attend the K-12 Ket'acik & Aapalluk Memorial School. This school serves students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The Lower Kuskokwim School District operates the school. As of 2018, the school had about 250 students and 15 teachers.
