Kylie Jayne Palmer, OAM (born 25 February 1990), is an Australian distance freestyle swimmer. She is known for her amazing achievements in the pool, especially in relay races.

Early Life and Training

Kylie grew up in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She went to Grace Lutheran College, Rothwell. There, she was the Sports Captain for her house, Pegasus. She also proudly represented her school in many swimming events.

Kylie started her swimming journey at the Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club. She trained under coach Ken Wood. Later, she continued her training at the Albany Creek Swim Club with coach John Rodgers.

Rising to the Top

Kylie quickly showed her talent in swimming.

  • In 2007, at the Australian Short Course Championships, she set a new Australian and Commonwealth record. This was for the 800-metre freestyle event.
  • She represented Australia at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She finished 5th in the 400-metre freestyle race.
  • At the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne, she placed 8th in the 800-metre freestyle.

World Championships Success

Kylie had a fantastic performance at the 2008 Short Course World Championships in Manchester. She won four medals there!

  • She earned two gold medals in the 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle events.
  • She also won a silver medal in the 800-metre freestyle.
  • Plus, she helped her team win a bronze medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay.

Qualifying for the Olympics

At the 2008 Australian Swimming Championships, Kylie continued to shine.

  • She won the 800-metre freestyle race with her best time ever. This win helped her qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
  • She also finished 4th in the 200-metre freestyle. This meant she could join the Australian relay team at the Olympics.

Gold in Beijing 2008

On 14 August 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, Kylie achieved a huge dream. She won a gold medal as part of the Australian 4×200-metre women's relay team. Her teammates were Stephanie Rice, Bronte Barratt, and Linda MacKenzie.

  • The Australian team beat strong teams like the USA and China.
  • They also broke the world record, finishing 5.78 seconds faster than the previous record of 7:44:31.
  • Kylie was the fastest swimmer on her team in that race. She gave Australia a 3.14-second lead, which was a big help for the team's victory.

Kylie continued her Olympic success at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She was part of the Australian 4×200-metre freestyle team that won a silver medal. This showed her consistent performance at the highest level of swimming.
