Kyrie Wilson's Football Journey
Kyrie Wilson has had an exciting career in professional football. He started his journey in the NFL before finding a home in the CFL.
Starting with the Oakland Raiders
After finishing college, Kyrie Wilson hoped to join an NFL team. He signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2016. This happened after the 2016 NFL draft, where teams pick new players. However, he was released from the team before the 2016 season began. This meant he did not play any regular season games for the Raiders.
Joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Kyrie Wilson then moved to Canada and signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on April 19, 2017. He made his first professional appearance in a game called the Banjo Bowl on September 9, 2017.
Key Moments with the Blue Bombers
In 2018, Kyrie played in five games. He then signed a new contract in early 2019 to stay with the team for two more years. The 2019 Winnipeg Blue Bombers season was a big one for him. He started in all 18 regular season games. During this time, he made 63 tackles, had three sacks, and caught one interception.
Kyrie played a very important part in helping the Blue Bombers reach the 107th Grey Cup in 2019. In that championship game, he made five tackles. He also broke up a pass that stopped the other team from scoring extra points. The Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup, which was their first championship in 29 years! This was Kyrie's first CFL championship.
Overcoming Injuries and Winning Again
Kyrie signed another two-year contract with the Blue Bombers in January 2021. This kept him with the team for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He faced a challenge early in the 2021 season when he got a hip injury. He did not play again until late September. Even with the injury, he played seven games and made 16 tackles.
Despite his injuries, Kyrie was a key player when the team defended their Grey Cup title. They played in the 2021 CFL Final against the Tiger-Cats. The Blue Bombers were behind in the game, but their defense helped them come back. The game went into overtime. Kyrie made an amazing play, catching a pass that was tipped by two teammates. This play sealed the win for the Blue Bombers, giving them their second championship in a row!
Kyrie's family, including his father, step-mother, sister, and brother, were there to celebrate with him. He said that winning during the pandemic showed that "no matter what you go through, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel."
Recent Seasons
In the 2022 CFL season, Kyrie Wilson suffered an Achilles injury early on. This injury meant he had to miss a lot of time recovering.
