Léon Ernest Moreaux (born March 10, 1852, died November 11, 1921) was a talented French sports shooter. He was an Olympian who competed in both pistol and rifle shooting events. He became famous for winning many medals at the Olympic Games in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Léon Moreaux's Olympic Journey
Léon Moreaux started shooting when he was younger. By the time he was 38, he was ready for big competitions. He took part in the 1900 Summer Olympics held in Paris, his home country.
Competing in Paris (1900)
At the 1900 Paris Olympics, Moreaux won two silver medals for France. One was in the 25-meter firearm event. The other was in the 50-meter Military Revolver Teams event.
He also competed in several other shooting events. He finished 17th in both the Free Rifle standing and kneeling competitions. In the Free Rifle (prone) event, he almost won a bronze medal, finishing in fourth place. He also came in 7th place in the Free Pistol event. In the trap shooting competition, he finished 16th out of 31 shooters.
His Most Successful Year: 1906
The year 1906 was Léon Moreaux's best year in sports shooting. He competed in the 1906 Intercalated Games in Athens. He entered ten different events and won a total of five Olympic medals!
Winning Gold in Athens (1906)
Moreaux won his first gold medals in 1906. He earned two gold medals: one in the 20-meter duelling pistol event and another in the 200-meter army rifle event. He also won a silver medal in the 25-meter firearm competition. On top of that, he secured two bronze medals. These were in the Free Rifle Free Position and the Free Rifle Team events.
He also competed in other events that year. He finished fourth in the Military Rifle event and fifth in the Military revolver event. In the Duelling Pistol (au commandment), he came in sixth place. He also competed in the Military revolver (gras) event, finishing 16th. In the Free Pistol (50m) event, he finished 19th.
Later Competitions and Retirement
Moreaux continued to compete even as he got older.
The 1908 Olympics
At 46 years old, Moreaux entered the 1908 Summer Olympics. He competed for France in the Free Team Rifle competition. He just missed out on a bronze medal, finishing in fourth place. By this time, he was close to 50 years old. He only competed in two other events at these Games. He finished 17th in the Free Pistol and 39th in the Free Rifle Combined event.
A Shooting Legend
After the 1908 Olympics, Léon Moreaux stopped competing professionally. During his amazing shooting career, he won a total of eight Olympic medals. This made him one of the top shooters of his time. Only Switzerland's Konrad Stäheli won more medals (nine) among his rivals. Moreaux is still considered one of the top ten Olympic shooters in history!
