LECOM Harborcenter is a super cool building in Buffalo, New York. It's a place where you can find lots of different things all in one spot! Imagine a building with shops, restaurants, a hotel, and even two ice hockey rinks. It's right across from the KeyBank Center and the fun Canalside area.

This amazing building is home to the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and the Canisius Golden Griffins hockey teams. It's also where the Buffalo Sabres practice.

Building Harborcenter: How It Was Made

The idea for Harborcenter started when some people from the Buffalo Sabres hockey team visited a similar place in Washington, D.C. That building had ice rinks on top of a parking garage. This gave them the idea to build something similar in Buffalo.

At first, the plan was just for two hockey rinks and a parking garage. But then, Kim Pegula, whose husband Terry Pegula owns the Sabres, suggested adding a hotel and restaurants. This made the project even bigger and better!

Construction on the 20-story Harborcenter began in March 2013. The building was finished in different stages. The hockey rinks and restaurants opened in late 2014. The hotel welcomed its first guests in August 2015.

What You Can Do at Harborcenter

Harborcenter is owned by Pegula Sports and Entertainment, a company run by Terry and Kim Pegula. It has many cool features for everyone to enjoy.

Ice Rinks and Sports Training

The building has indoor parking for 750 cars. On the sixth floor, there are two official ice hockey rinks. One rink can seat 1,800 people, and the other is smaller, with room for 150.

There's also a special training facility called IMPACT Sports Performance. It's a 5,000 square foot gym where athletes can train off the ice. The building also has a classroom and a RapidShot Hockey Training System to help players improve their skills.

In September 2019, the building was named LECOM Harborcenter. This happened after a 10-year agreement with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).

Shops and Restaurants

Harborcenter has a 205-room Marriott hotel, which is a great place to stay. You can also find several places to eat and shop.

The 716 Food and Sport restaurant opened in October 2014. It's a two-floor restaurant where you can grab a bite. There's also a special Tim Hortons coffee shop. It honors Tim Horton, who played for the Buffalo Sabres, and the old Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. A statue of Tim Horton was even placed across the street!

The building also has a pro shop where you can buy sports gear. Along Main Street, there are smaller stores called The Shops at Harborcenter. Over the years, these shops have included places like Red Siren, Modern Nostalgia, Fowler's Chocolates, and Clayton's Toys & Gifts. Healthy Scratch, a quick-serve restaurant and boutique, also opened here.

Hockey Events and Tournaments

The two ice rinks at Harborcenter, known as The Rinks, are busy with hockey action.

Home Teams and Practice Facilities

The Rinks are home to the Canisius Golden Griffins college hockey team and the Buffalo Jr. Sabres. The larger rink, called KeyBank Rink at Harborcenter, is where these teams play. It also hosts the Erie Community College Kats. The smaller rink is known as New Wave Energy Rink.

The rinks are also used by the Academy of Hockey and for the Harborcenter Cup. Plus, they serve as the official practice facility for the Buffalo Sabres.

Major Hockey Events

The rinks opened on October 31, 2014, with exciting games. The Canisius Golden Griffins played against Ohio State, and the Buffalo Jr. Sabres teams also had games.

Every November, a special needs hockey team, the Buffalo Sabres Thunder, hosts a tournament called the Coach Michael Steffan Invitational Tournament.

Harborcenter has hosted many big hockey events:

  • From 2015 to 2019, the NHL Scouting Combine was held here. This is where young hockey players show off their skills before the draft.
  • Buffalo also hosted the NHL Entry Draft in 2016.
  • The 2015 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships took place at Harborcenter.
  • In January 2016, the first-ever National Women's Hockey League all-star game was held here.
