LaMont Smith is a former American track and field athlete. He was born on December 11, 1972. LaMont is best known for winning a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was part of the United States' 4x400 meter relay team.
LaMont Smith: An Olympic Champion
LaMont Smith grew up in Willingboro Township, New Jersey. He attended Willingboro High School. This school is also famous for another Olympic champion, Carl Lewis. Carl Lewis also won a gold medal at the same 1996 Olympics. While at Willingboro High, LaMont won nine state championships. This showed his amazing talent in track and field.
College Success
After high school, LaMont went to Blinn College. There, he became a four-time national champion in the NJCAA. The NJCAA stands for the National Junior College Athletic Association. His success at Blinn College led him to transfer to the University of Houston. He continued to excel in track events.
Olympic Glory
LaMont Smith joined the Santa Monica Track Club. This club also included the legendary Carl Lewis. In 1996, LaMont achieved his biggest dream. He competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was a key member of the United States' men's 4x400 meter relay team. His team won the gold medal, making him an Olympic champion. This was a huge moment in his career. In the same year, LaMont also became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
