LaMont Smith was born on December 11, 1972. He is a former track and field athlete. He won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. This was for the men's 4 × 400 meter relay race. He ran for the United States team.

Early Life and High School Success

LaMont Smith grew up in Willingboro Township, New Jersey. He went to Willingboro High School. This is the same school as Carl Lewis, another famous Olympic gold medalist. Carl Lewis also won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics.

While at Willingboro High, LaMont Smith was a very successful athlete. He won nine state championships. This shows how talented he was from a young age.

College Athletics and Olympic Gold

After high school, Smith attended Blinn College. There, he became a 4-time national champion in the NJCAA. This stands for the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Later, he transferred to the University of Houston. He continued to excel in track. LaMont Smith was about ten years younger than Carl Lewis. He joined Lewis on the Santa Monica Track Club. This club helped many top athletes train.

In 1996, LaMont Smith achieved his biggest dream. He won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was part of the men's 4 × 400 meter relay team. This is a race where four runners each run 400 meters. They pass a baton to each other. Winning an Olympic gold medal is a huge achievement for any athlete.
