La Capilla is a town and a special area (called a municipality) in Colombia. It is located in the Boyacá Department, specifically in the Eastern Boyacá Province. The main part of the town sits high up, about 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) above sea level. This area is part of the beautiful Tenza Valley.

What's in a Name?

La Capilla was first known as La Capilla de Tenza. This name came from a special event. People believed that Our Lady of Candle appeared near the village. Because of this, a small church, called a chapel (capilla in Spanish), was built. That's how the town got its name, La Capilla.

A Look Back in Time

The very first people to live in the area of La Capilla were the Muisca. They were a group of people who lived in a loose confederation. The Muisca in this specific area were connected to the leaders (called caciques) of nearby towns like Garagoa, Sutatenza, and Somondoco.

In 1537, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada traveled through the Tenza Valley. He and his soldiers were on their way to the lands of the zaque (another Muisca leader) in Hunza.

Modern La Capilla was officially founded on November 13, 1793. The person who founded it was Juan de la Cruz Aguirre.
