La Colorada is a small town located in the state of Sonora in north-western Mexico. It's part of the La Colorada Municipality. In 2005, about 1,754 people lived in the whole municipality, with 288 living right in the town itself.

History of La Colorada

This area was first settled by Spanish Jesuit missionaries. They founded the town sometime between 1740 and 1743. It was originally known as Minas Prietas.

La Colorada officially became its own municipality on June 28, 1934. It was once a very important mining town in Mexico. Back in 1895, it had a much larger population, with over 5,604 people living there!

Where is La Colorada?

La Colorada is located about 45 kilometers (29 miles) southeast of Hermosillo, which is the capital city of Sonora.

Other small towns you can find within the La Colorada municipality include Tecorípa, Cobachi, Estación Torres, and San José de Pimas.

What is La Colorada known for?

The main activity in La Colorada is mining. The most important company there is Mina La Colorada. They dig deep into the earth to find valuable minerals like gold, copper, and zinc.

There's also another mine nearby that extracts graphite. Graphite is a mineral used for many things, from pencil lead to industrial products.
