The way people make a living in the Kickapoo Valley, where La Farge is located, has changed over many years. Long ago, fur trading was the main business. Native Americans, like the Ho-Chunk people, traded animal furs such as beaver and muskrat with European and American traders. This was common from the late 1600s until the 1840s. After that, logging, which is cutting down trees for wood, became more important.
