What La Liga Filipina Wanted to Do
The main goals of La Liga Filipina were:
- To unite the entire archipelago (all the islands) of the Philippines into one strong society.
- To make sure Filipinos and Spaniards in the Philippines were treated equally.
- To offer mutual protection and help each other when needed.
- To defend against unfairness and violence.
- To encourage education, agriculture (farming), and commerce (trade).
- To study and put into practice good changes for the country.
Rizal's Arrest and What Happened Next
Jose Rizal worked hard to make La Liga Filipina a peaceful group. However, the Spanish authorities saw it as a threat. Just four days after the group was formed, on the night of July 6, 1892, Rizal was secretly arrested. The very next day, Governor-General Eulogio Despujol ordered Rizal to be sent away to Dapitan. This meant Rizal had to leave Manila and live in a faraway place.
After Rizal's arrest, La Liga Filipina stopped working for a while. Later, it was started up again by Domingo Franco and Andres Bonifacio. But the group soon split into two different parts:
- The Cuerpo de Compromisarios (Body of Compromisers) continued to support the newspaper La Solidaridad in Spain.
- The Katipunan was a new group formed in the Philippines. It aimed for more direct action to achieve independence.
