La Marañosa

La Marañosa is a place in Madrid, Spain. It has hills that are about 700 meters high. These hills look over both sides of the Jarama river.

A Special Factory in La Marañosa

This area is known for a special factory. It was called the "Fábrica Nacional de Productos Químicos." This means "National Factory of Chemical Products." This factory made important chemicals for the Spanish Army of Africa. They used these chemicals during a conflict called the Rif rebellion. This happened between 1923 and 1927.

The Battle of Jarama

On February 5, 1937, a big battle happened here. It was part of the Spanish Civil War. This battle is known as the Battle of Jarama.

The Start of the Battle

The battle began with attacks by the Nationalist side. They attacked the positions of the Republican army. These positions were on the west side of the Jarama river. The first attacks surprised the Republicans. The Nationalists moved quickly in groups. They quickly took over the unprepared Republican forces.

Capturing La Marañosa Hill

General García Escámez led the southern part of the Nationalist attack. General Rada led the northern part. General Asensio led the middle. On February 6, General Rada's soldiers took La Marañosa hill. This hill is 700 meters high. It looks over both sides of the Jarama river.

The two Republican groups on La Marañosa hill fought bravely. They stayed in their defenses on the cliff top. They fought until the very end. From this high hill, the Nationalists could control the river crossing. They used their artillery and machine guns from this spot.
