The La Marina Lighthouse (which means Faro de la Marina in Spanish) is a very famous lighthouse in Miraflores, Lima, the capital city of Peru. It stands tall on high cliffs right above the Pacific Ocean. This lighthouse is one of the most visited and well-known lighthouses in the entire country.
History of the Lighthouse
The La Marina Lighthouse was first built a long time ago, in the year 1900. Its original location was at a place called Punta Coles, which is a headland near the city of Ilo.
However, in 1973, the lighthouse was carefully taken apart. It was then moved and put back together in Miraflores. Today, it stands in a park called Parque del Faro, which means "Lighthouse Park." This park is one of many popular parks located along the cliffs in Lima. The park also celebrates 100 years of Peruvian navigation.
About the Lighthouse Structure
The lighthouse itself is a tall tower made of iron. It stands about 22 m (72 ft) high. At the top, it has a special walkway called a gallery and a lantern room where the light shines from.
The tower is painted a very dark blue color. It also has two bright white bands wrapped around it.
The light from the lighthouse is very powerful. It shines from 108 metres (354 ft) above the sea. This means its light can be seen from as far as 18 nautical miles (33 km) away. The light flashes three times in a row, and this pattern repeats every fifteen seconds.
