The Estadio de La Romareda is a famous football stadium in Zaragoza, Spain. It is the home ground for the Real Zaragoza football team. The stadium first opened its doors on September 8, 1957. The very first game played there was between Real Zaragoza and CA Osasuna, with Real Zaragoza winning 4–3.
La Romareda can hold 33,608 people. It is currently the 12th largest stadium in Spain. It is also the biggest stadium in the Aragon region. Many fans come to watch Real Zaragoza play, with about 20,000 people attending matches on average.
The stadium has been updated several times. It was improved in 1977 and again in 1982. These upgrades were made because it was chosen as a venue for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. La Romareda also hosted football matches during the 1992 Summer Olympics. In 1994, it became a stadium where everyone had a seat.

A Look at La Romareda's History
The idea for La Romareda came from the mayor, Luis Gómez Laguna. His successor, Cesáreo Alierta, who was also the president of Real Zaragoza, helped make it happen. Their old stadium, Estadio Torrero, could only hold 15,000 people. This was considered too small for the growing team and its fans.
The city council approved the plans for the new stadium on February 9, 1956. The company Agroman built the stadium. It took them 15 months to finish the work, with 350 employees helping.
Big Events and Concerts at the Stadium
Besides football, La Romareda has also been a place for huge concerts. Famous artists have performed there for thousands of fans.
For example, Michael Jackson held a concert at the stadium on September 23, 1996. About 45,000 people came to see him during his HIStory World Tour. Later that year, Gloria Estefan also performed to a sold-out crowd of 45,000 fans on October 20, 1996.
The Stadium's Future: A New Romareda
There have been plans to build a new stadium in Zaragoza for a while. In 2006, there were plans to make La Romareda bigger, to hold 43,000 seats. However, these plans were stopped due to a lawsuit.
More recently, big changes have started. On July 8, 2024, the demolition of the original La Romareda began. This is part of a plan to build a brand new stadium.
In September 2024, the project for the new stadium, called Nueva Romareda, was put out for bids. The cost for the main demolition and construction is about 138.5 million euros.
Construction of the new South Goal stand started in the first half of 2025. From July 1, 2025, after the football season ends, work began on the rest of the stadium. This includes taking down the old roof and rebuilding the other three stands.
The new Nueva Romareda is designed to have 43,110 seats for football matches. It will also be able to host concerts. The goal is for the new stadium to be ready by August 31, 2027. This means Real Zaragoza could play in their new home for the 2027–28 season.
La Romareda and the FIFA World Cup
La Romareda was one of the stadiums used for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. It hosted three matches during the group stage of the tournament.
The stadium might also host matches for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Spain is co-hosting this event with Morocco and Portugal.
