La Ventana is a small, sunny fishing village in Mexico. It's located on the eastern side of the Baja California peninsula. You can find it on the shore of La Ventana Bay, just south of La Paz.
This village was started in the early 1940s. A pearl diver named Salome Leon founded it. He moved his family from La Paz to La Ventana Bay. This happened when pearl diving became less profitable. Many of Salome's family members still live and work in the village today.

History of La Ventana
The area around La Ventana has a long history. People lived here at least 10,000 years ago. These early people were hunter-gatherers. They left behind amazing rock paintings. You can still see these paintings near the city and all over the Baja California Peninsula.
Later, explorers arrived by sea. Hernán Cortés sailed into La Paz Bay in 1535. He tried to start a settlement, but it didn't work out. Another explorer, Sebastián Vizcaíno, came in 1596. He was looking for pearls. The first lasting settlement in Baja California was built later, in 1695, further north in Loreto.
How the Village Began
La Ventana village itself was founded by Salome Leon. He was a pearl diver from La Paz. When pearl diving became difficult, he looked for a new place. He found the beautiful La Ventana Bay. He brought his family over the mountains to start a new life. They built their homes and continued to fish. This is how the village of La Ventana began.
What's in a Name?
The name "La Ventana" means "The Window" in English. This name was chosen for a special reason. From the village, you can see a clear "window" to the Gulf of California. This view is between Isla Cerralvo and Punta Arena. It was a big change from La Paz Bay, which felt more closed in to the first settlers.
