The Labrador tiger moth, also known by its scientific name Grammia quenseli, is a type of moth. It belongs to a family of moths called Erebidae. These moths are known for their often colorful patterns.
Where They Live
This moth lives in many cold places around the world. In Central Europe, you can find it high up in the Alps mountains. It lives there at very high altitudes, between 2,000 and 2,700 meters (about 6,500 to 8,800 feet) above sea level.
The Labrador tiger moth also lives in Northern Scandinavia. It is found across the polar regions of Eurasia. This includes mountains in Siberia, Mongolia, and northern China. You can also find it in Japan, especially on Mount Daisetsu in Hokkaido. It also lives in the polar parts of North America.
About the Moth
The Labrador tiger moth is a medium-sized moth. Its wingspan can be anywhere from 26 to 42 millimeters (about 1 to 1.6 inches). This is roughly the size of a large coin.
What They Eat
The young moths, called larvae or caterpillars, have a special diet. They like to eat certain plants. Their favorite foods include Alchemilla alpina, also known as alpine lady's mantle. They also feed on Plantago alpina, which is a type of plantain found in alpine areas.
