Lac (which means "The Lake" in Arabic) is one of the 23 main areas, or regions, in the country of Chad. Its capital city is Bol. This region is mostly made up of what used to be called the Lac Prefecture. It includes the part of Lake Chad that belongs to Chad.

Geography of Lac Region
The Lac region shares its borders with other regions of Chad. To the north and east, it borders the Kanem Region. To the south, it borders the Hadjer-Lamis Region and the country of Cameroon. To the southwest, it borders Nigeria, and to the northwest, it borders Niger.
The most important natural feature in this region is Lake Chad. This lake changes in size throughout the year depending on the season. It is very important for the people and wildlife in this part of Africa. The region gets about 744 millimeters (about 29 inches) of rain each year. It also has different types of plants and trees growing in various areas.

The main city and capital of the region is Bol. Other important towns and settlements in the Lac region include:

People and Population
According to a census from 2009, the Lac region had a population of 451,369 people. About half of these people (49.6%) were female. The average household in the region had about 4.6 people living in it. In rural areas, households had 4.6 people, and in urban areas, they had 4.9 people.
The main groups of people living in the Lac region are the Buduma, who make up more than 18% of the population. The Fula and Kanembu people together make up more than 66% of the population.
Economy and Agriculture
The Lac region is a very important farming area for the whole country of Chad. Farmers here grow cotton and groundnuts (peanuts), which are the two main crops sold for money in Chad. Many other local crops, like rice, are also grown in this region.
How the Region is Governed
The Lac region is divided into two smaller areas called departments. These are:
- Mamdi Department, with its capital city Bol.
- Wayi Department, with its capital city Ngouri.
Chad is divided into regions, departments, and local communities to help manage the country. Each region, like Lac, is led by a Governor. The President of Chad chooses these Governors. Local leaders are also elected to help run the smaller departments and communities.
