Lac La Martre is a very large lake located in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is the third biggest lake in this area. You can find it about 125 mi (201 km) northwest of Yellowknife, which is the capital city of the Northwest Territories. The community of Whatì, which belongs to the Tłı̨chǫ people, is located right on the eastern shore of Lac La Martre.
Wildlife and Birds
Lac La Martre is a super important spot for many different kinds of birds. The lake is on a major route that birds use when they fly south for winter or north for summer. This journey is called migration.
Hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese, and other migratory birds come to this lake. They gather here to find food in the marshy areas around the lake. It's like a giant rest stop and restaurant for them!
The Community of Whatì
The small First Nations community of Whatì is found right on the shores of Lac La Martre. This community is home to about 460 people. It's a special place where the Tłı̨chǫ people live and share their culture.
