Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord is a freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. Its name means "Sainte Anne lake of the North" in English. You can find it inside the Grands-Jardins National Park. This park is located northeast of Quebec City.
The lake is in an area called Lac-Pikauba, which is part of the Charlevoix region. The Sainte-Anne River flows right through this lake.
A forest road helps people get to the lake. This road connects to Route 381 to the north. Logging is an important activity in this area. However, many people also visit the lake for fun, like fishing or hiking.
Because the lake is high up in the mountains, its surface usually freezes. This happens from late November until early April. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from early December.
Where is Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord?
Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord is surrounded by tall mountains. Some nearby peaks reach about 850 metres (2,790 ft) to the northwest and 949 metres (3,114 ft) to the northeast.
The lake's exit point is located:
- About 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) east of Lac Carré.
- About 5.7 kilometres (3.5 mi) southeast of a bend in the Malbaie River.
- About 71.6 kilometres (44.5 mi) north of where the Sainte-Anne River meets the Saint Lawrence River.
- About 32.0 kilometres (19.9 mi) northwest of downtown Baie-Saint-Paul.
Size and Water Flow
Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) long. It has a shape like a rectangle with rounded corners. The lake is about 0.7 kilometres (0.43 mi) wide at its widest point. It sits at an elevation of 748 metres (2,454 ft) above sea level.
The lake gets most of its water from two main sources. The Sainte-Anne River flows into it from the north. Water also comes from Lac Grâce, which is to the east.
From the dam at the lake's exit, the water flows for about 63.2 kilometres (39.3 mi). It follows the Sainte-Anne River southwest, then south, and then southwest again. This river eventually flows through downtown Beaupré and into the Saint Lawrence River.
How the Lake Got Its Name
The name "Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord" comes from the river that flows through it. The river was originally called "Rivière Sainte-Anne du Nord." This name was officially approved on April 3, 1959.
Later, in 1982, the river's name was shortened to "Rivière Sainte-Anne." This was done because people usually just called it that. You might also hear the lake called Grand lac Sainte-Anne or Grand lac Sainte-Anne du Nord.
The name "Lac Sainte-Anne du Nord" was officially recorded on December 5, 1968. This happened at the Place Names Bank of the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
