Lady Charles Cavendish-Bentinck was born Anne Wellesley on 29 February 1788. She was a British noblewoman. From 1806 to 1816, she was known as Lady Abdy. She is famous for being the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Lady Charles lived until 19 March 1875.
Her Family Background
Anne Wellesley was the daughter of Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley. Her mother was Hyacinthe-Gabrielle Roland, an actress. Anne's parents married on 29 March 1794. This happened six years after Anne was born. After their marriage, Anne was officially recognized as their legitimate child.
Her grandparents on her father's side were Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington, and Anne Hill. Anne Hill was the daughter of Arthur Hill-Trevor, 1st Viscount Dungannon.
Anne also had famous uncles. These included Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. He was a very important military leader. Her other uncles were William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington and Henry Wellesley, 1st Baron Cowley.
Her Marriages and Children
Anne Wellesley married her first husband, Sir William Abdy, 7th Baronet, on 3 July 1806. Their marriage lasted for nine years. They did not have any children together.
Sir William Abdy introduced Anne to his friend, Lord Charles Cavendish-Bentinck. Lord Charles was the younger son of a former British Prime Minister. His father was William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland.
Anne and Sir William Abdy ended their marriage. They were granted a divorce on 25 June 1816. This was done through a special Act of Parliament.
Anne and Lord Charles married on 23 July 1816. They had four children together:
- Anne Hyacinthe Cavendish-Bentinck (born 1 September 1816 – died 7 June 1888)
- Emily Cavendish-Bentinck (died 6 June 1850). She married the Reverend Henry Hopwood and had children.
- The Reverend Charles William Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck (born 8 November 1817 – died 17 August 1865).
- He was the father of Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck.
- Cecilia was the mother of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
- Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II.
- Lt.-Gen. Arthur Cavendish-Bentinck (born 10 May 1819 – died 11 December 1877).
- He first married Elizabeth Sophia Hawkins-Whitshed. They were the parents of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland.
- He later married Augusta Browne, who became the 1st Baroness Bolsover. They were the parents of Lady Ottoline Morrell.
