The Lady of Galera was likely made by the Phoenicians, an ancient people known for their trade and art. Her hairstyle and clothing show influences from Ancient Egypt. However, her strong, solid shape also looks a bit like statues from Mesopotamia. This suggests different cultures influenced her design. She might have been a sacred object for many years before being placed in a tomb as a special offering.

Where Was the Lady of Galera Found?

The figurine was discovered in Galera, a town in Spain. This town was once called Tutugi in ancient times. Near Galera, there is an important archaeological site called the Necropolis of Tutugi. A necropolis is like a large ancient cemetery. This site has many different kinds of tombs.

The most common tombs at this site are rectangular rooms. These rooms are covered by a round mound of earth. You can reach them through a long hallway. Inside these tombs, archaeologists have found many interesting items. These include vases from Phoenicia, Greece, and the Iberian people. They also found ornaments, weapons, furniture, and other figures made of clay and alabaster. These items date back to between 600 BC and 300 BC.
