Laietani facts for kids
The Laietani were an ancient people who lived in the Iberian Peninsula (which the Romans later called Hispania). They were part of a larger group known as the Iberians, who lived in this area before the Romans arrived. The Laietani made their home in the region where the city of Barcelona is today. In fact, a major street in Barcelona, Via Laietana, is named after them! It's believed that the Laietani spoke their own unique Iberian language.
Culture and Coins
The Laietani were skilled enough to make their own coins. These coins had a special message written on them: laiesken. This word was written using a script from the northeastern part of Iberia. Experts believe that laiesken meant "from the Laietani" or "from those of Laie" in their language. It was a way for them to identify themselves and their people on their money.
