Lake Bernard is a beautiful freshwater lake in Ontario, Canada. It's located about 276 km (171 mi) north of Toronto. You can find it near Algonquin Park, between the towns of Huntsville and North Bay.

This clear lake is about 7 km (4.3 mi) long and 2.5 km (1.5 mi) wide. The village of Sundridge is on its northern shore. The rest of the lake is surrounded by the township of Strong.

Discovering Lake Bernard

Lake Bernard is special for a few reasons. It is known as the largest freshwater lake in the world that doesn't have any islands! This is quite unusual, especially since the nearby Muskoka Lakes region has many islands.

How Deep is Lake Bernard?

Lake Bernard is also a very deep lake. Maps show it goes down to about 45.7 m (150 ft). However, some people say it might be much deeper, possibly up to 400 m (1,300 ft) in some spots. This has led to ideas that a meteor might have formed the lake long ago.

A Look Back in Time

In the past, Lake Bernard was mainly used for logging. This means trees were cut down and floated across the lake. You can still see some old logs that have sunk to the bottom. The lake used to be called Stoney Lake. This was because of all the rocks found around its southern shores. Today, much of the lake has sandy beaches and shallow areas, perfect for swimming.

Fun Activities at Lake Bernard

Lake Bernard is a popular spot for many fun activities all year round.

Summer Fun

During the summer, there are several exciting events. In July, people celebrate Canada Day with festivities. August brings the Sunflower Festival and the RBC Sundridge Triathlon.

The lake is great for fishing. You can catch fish like smallmouth bass, lake trout, whitefish, yellow perch, and rock bass. Lake trout and whitefish are quite common here.

You can also explore the area by cycling. Lake Bernard is part of the Discovery Routes Trails system. For amazing views, check out High Park Lookout and its hiking trails.

Winter Adventures

When winter arrives, Lake Bernard transforms into a snowy playground. Snowmobiling on and around the lake is very popular. Many people also enjoy ice fishing, and you can see fishing huts on the ice until April. If you're looking for a unique experience, some local resorts offer dog-sledding.

Glen Bernard Camp

Lake Bernard is also home to Glen Bernard Camp. This is a residential camp for girls, which was started in 1922 by Mary S. Edgar.

Living by the Lake

The shores of Lake Bernard have many cottages and homes. Some people live there all year, while others visit for holidays. Many of the permanent residents are descendants of the first settlers who came to the area in the late 1800s.

Several resorts are located on Lake Bernard, offering places to stay and enjoy the area. These include Shady Nook Cottages, the Northridge Inn & Resort, Lake Bernard Park campground, and Caswell Resort Hotel.
