Lake Buena Vista is a small city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is most famous for being the mailing address for Walt Disney World Resort. However, almost all of the Disney theme parks and other big attractions are actually located in the nearby city of Bay Lake.

Lake Buena Vista is one of two cities inside the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. This district also includes Walt Disney World Resort. In 2020, only 24 people lived permanently in Lake Buena Vista. The city is part of the larger Orlando metropolitan area.

History of Lake Buena Vista

How the City Started

The city of Lake Buena Vista began as the City of Reedy Creek. It was officially created on May 12, 1967. On the same day, a special area called the Reedy Creek Improvement District was also formed. This district gave The Walt Disney Company special powers to manage its land, like building roads and providing services.

Changing the City's Name and Location

In 1969, the city's borders were changed. It moved to a new spot, taking over some land that used to be part of the city of Bay Lake. Soon after, the City of Reedy Creek was renamed the City of Lake Buena Vista. This new name made more sense because the Reedy Creek did not flow through the city's new location.

The name "Buena Vista" comes from a street in Burbank, California. This is where The Walt Disney Company has its main offices. "Buena Vista" is a Spanish phrase that means "good view."

Walt Disney's Original Dream

Walt Disney had a big dream for this area. He wanted to build a futuristic city, a "community of the future." This dream city was never fully built. However, some of his ideas were used in the EPCOT theme park and later in the town of Celebration, Florida.

Today, the only people who live permanently in Lake Buena Vista are Disney employees and their families. They live in a small community called Royal Oak Court. For many years, almost all the land in the city was owned by Disney companies.

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District

In 2023, the Florida Legislature changed the rules for the Reedy Creek Improvement District. It was replaced by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. This new district now manages the area where Lake Buena Vista and Walt Disney World are located.

The Lake Itself

The actual Lake Buena Vista is a small lake located near the Buena Vista Golf Course. Before Disney bought the land, it was called "Blake Lake." The lake was named after Buena Vista Street in California, where Disney's main offices are.

Sometimes, maps for the Disney Springs area might call "Village Lake" by the name "Lake Buena Vista." Village Lake is connected to the actual Lake Buena Vista by a small stream.
