Lake Crescent is a special lake in Tasmania, Australia. It's not a natural lake, but a "man-made reservoir." This means people built it to store water.

The lake is found in the eastern part of the Midlands region. It is about 100 kilometres (62 mi) north of the city of Hobart.

Amazing Fish and Wildlife

Lake Crescent is home to many interesting creatures, especially fish! It's a really important place for nature.

Unique Fish Species

One very special fish living here is the golden galaxias (Galaxias auratus). This fish is found only in Lake Crescent and nearby Lake Sorell.

Another interesting resident is the Short Fin Freshwater Eel (Anguilla australis). These eels used to travel all the way from the ocean to Lake Crescent! However, dams on the Derwent River and screens on the Clyde River now make it hard for them to migrate. To help the eels, young eels called "elvers" are regularly put into the lake. This helps keep the eel population healthy.

Protecting the Lake's Fish

In 1995, a type of fish called carp (Cyprinus carpio) was found in the lake. Carp can be a problem because they can take over and harm the natural environment. But, using clever methods, all the carp were successfully removed from Lake Crescent! This was a big win for the lake's ecosystem.

Lake Crescent is also a popular spot for fishing. People enjoy catching brown trout and rainbow trout here. These fish are regularly added to the lake to support fishing activities.

The lake is part of an important area called a Ramsar wetland. This means it's recognized internationally for its special natural value, especially for birds and other wildlife.
