Exploring the History of Lake George Village

Caldwell Village, New York
Village of Lake George, 1854

The Village of Lake George was first known as Caldwell. This name is still used by the Caldwell Presbyterian Church today. The village is located at the eastern edge of the Adirondack Park.

Colonial Times and Fort William Henry

This area was an important path between the British and French colonies. Armies often traveled through here during the Colonial wars. A famous place in the village is Fort William Henry. The original fort was burned during the French and Indian War. Today, a rebuilt version of the fort acts as a living museum. You can visit and learn about life in the past.

Growth as a Tourist Destination

In the late 1800s, Lake George started to become a popular place for visitors. Railroad tracks led right to the steamboat docks. From there, steamboats took people to hotels further up the lake. The Lake George Steamboat Company still offers steamboat rides from Lake George today.

The Village of Lake George officially became a village in 1903. Besides the fort, you can see other historic places. These include the old railway station and a 19th-century courthouse and jail. The local historical society now runs these as a museum.

Historic Battle Sites

At one motel beach, a plaque marks where the Marquis de Montcalm landed with his army. He was preparing to attack the fort. A short distance south of the village, along US 9, you can find a plaque for the Bloody Pond Massacre. These sites remind us of the area's important past.
