About Lake Granby
Lake Granby is a very important part of Colorado's water system. It holds a lot of water that is used for different purposes. The lake has about 40 miles (64 kilometers) of shoreline. This means there is plenty of space to explore around its edges.
How Lake Granby Was Made
Lake Granby is not a natural lake. It was created by people building a large structure called the Granby Dam. The dam was finished in 1950. It is part of a bigger project called the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. This project helps move water across Colorado.
Water from Lake Granby is pumped to another place. It goes through a special pump plant called the Farr Pump Plant. From there, the water flows through a pipeline. This pipeline then empties into a canal. The canal connects to another lake called Shadow Mountain Reservoir. The Bureau of Reclamation owns the pump plant. Northern Water is the group that runs it.
Fun Things to Do
Lake Granby is a favorite place for people who love to fish. Many anglers come here to catch fish. The lake is regularly stocked with different types of fish. You can find both Trout and Kokanee Salmon swimming in its waters.
The Lake Granby Yacht Club
Lake Granby is also home to a special club called the Lake Granby Yacht Club. This club is for people who enjoy sailing. It is located very high up in the mountains. The club sits at an elevation of about 8,280 feet (2,524 meters).
This makes the Lake Granby Yacht Club one of the highest yacht clubs in the world. It is even a little higher than the Grand Lake Yacht Club. That club is on nearby Grand Lake.
