Lake Harding, also known as Bartlett's Ferry Lake, is a large, man-made lake. It covers about 5,850-acre (23.7 km2) of land. This lake is a type of reservoir, which means it's a place where water is collected and stored. It was created on the Chattahoochee River.
The lake is found in Harris County, Georgia. Some parts of the lake also reach into Alabama. Lake Harding is quite deep, especially near the dam, where it goes down over 100 feet (30 m).
How the Lake Was Made
Lake Harding was created by building a big structure called the Bartlett's Ferry Dam. This dam holds back the water from the Chattahoochee River. The Columbus Power Company built the lake and dam in 1926. Their main goal was to make electricity using the power of the water, which is called hydroelectric power.
The lake was named after R.M. Harding. He was an important official at the power company. A few years later, in 1930, the dam and lake were bought by Georgia Power.
Fun Things to Do
Over the years, Lake Harding has become a very popular spot for people to have fun. Many local families enjoy spending time here. Lots of people have built homes right along the lake's edge. This makes it a great place for swimming, boating, and fishing.
A smaller stream called Halawakee Creek flows into Lake Harding. This creek adds to the lake's water.
Islands in the Lake
Lake Harding has several islands. These are pieces of land surrounded by water within the lake. One of the most interesting islands is called Huston's Island. On this island, you can find the old remains of a house that used to be there.
Sports on the Water
Lake Harding is also a practice spot for the Auburn University Club Rowing Team. If you visit the lake early in the morning on weekdays, you might see the team out on the water. They are often practicing their rowing skills there.
