The Lake Hotel is a famous place to stay in Yellowstone National Park. It was built a long time ago, in 1891. This makes it the oldest hotel still open in the park!

The hotel was made bigger and changed in 1903 by an architect named Robert Reamer. He also designed the famous Old Faithful Inn. Unlike some other park buildings, the Lake Hotel looks simpler. It has a classic "Colonial Revival" style. It features three large porches with tall columns, all facing Yellowstone Lake. In 2015, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a very important historical place in the United States.

A Look at the Lake Hotel's History

The Lake Hotel started as a three-story building in 1891. It had parts that stuck out on each end. The Northern Pacific Railway helped build it. They were also building other hotels in the park at that time.

How the Hotel Grew

In 1903, Robert Reamer changed the parts that stuck out into the big porches you see today. He also added a new section to the hotel. Later, in 1922-1923, another part was added to the east side. In 1928, a two-story section was built on the west side. This made the dining room bigger and added a sunny lounge area.

The entire hotel was updated between 1984 and 1990. More recently, in 2012, the west side of the hotel was renovated. This included the dining room and the beautiful sun room. The rest of the rooms were updated in 2013-2014.

Nearby Historic Spots

The Lake Hotel is close to other interesting places. These include the Lake Fish Hatchery Historic District and the Grand Loop Road Historic District. These areas also have historical importance in the park.

The Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins is part of Historic Hotels of America. This is a special group that helps protect historic hotels across the country.
