Lake Mohonk is a beautiful lake located in Ulster County, New York, in the United States. It's about 14 miles (22.5 km) northwest of the city of Poughkeepsie. Many fun activities on the lake are managed by the famous Mohonk Mountain House, a historic resort nearby.
Exploring Lake Mohonk
Lake Mohonk is a small but interesting lake. It's about half a mile (800 meters) long and 60 feet (18 meters) deep. This lake sits very high up, about 1,245 feet (379 meters) above sea level! You can find it near the town of New Paltz.
The lake is close to Sky Top Mountain, which is one of the tallest peaks in the Shawangunk Ridge. Sky Top Mountain reaches 1,542 feet (470 meters) high. Just east of the lake's southern end, you'll see the top of Sky Top Mountain. To the west, another tall spot called Eagle Cliff rises to 1,412 feet (430 meters).
Fun Activities and Challenges
Lake Mohonk is also part of an exciting event called the Survival of the Shawangunks. This is a tough competition where athletes swim across the lake. It's the final water part of their race, making it a very important and challenging section!
