Lake Rotopokaka is a special kind of lake found in the Far North District of New Zealand. It's right next to Tokerau Beach on the east coast of the Karikari Peninsula. People sometimes call this lake the 'Coca Cola lake'. This is because the water gets its unique dark, brownish color from natural materials like peat and tannins, making it look a bit like the popular fizzy drink!

What is a Dune Lake?
Lake Rotopokaka is known as a dune lake. This means it formed in the hollows between sand dunes. Over time, these hollows filled with rainwater, creating a lake. Dune lakes are often found near coastlines where there are lots of sand dunes.
Why is it called 'Coca Cola Lake'?
The interesting color of Lake Rotopokaka comes from two natural things:
- Peat: This is partly decayed plant material that builds up in wet, boggy areas.
- Tannins: These are natural chemicals released from plants, especially from leaves and wood, as they break down.
When peat and tannins mix with the water, they stain it a dark brown, just like tea or coffee. This gives the lake its famous 'Coca Cola' look!
Lake Features and Surroundings
Lake Rotopokaka is unique because it doesn't have any rivers flowing into it (inflows) or out of it (outflows). It mainly gets its water from rainfall.
The land around the lake, called the catchment area, is full of native New Zealand plants. You can find:
- Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium): A common shrub known for its beautiful flowers and medicinal honey.
- Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa): Often called New Zealand's Christmas tree because of its bright red flowers that bloom in summer.
- Cabbage tree (Cordyline): A tall, palm-like plant with long, sword-shaped leaves.
- Flax (Phormium): A plant with long, tough leaves that were traditionally used by Māori for weaving.
Fun at the Lake
Lake Rotopokaka is a popular spot for people to visit and enjoy the outdoors. It's a great place for activities like swimming, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water. You can easily reach the lake from Ramp Road, making it a convenient destination for a day out.
