The least populous Colorado municipality

The Town of Lakeside is a small town in Jefferson County, Colorado, United States. It is known for being the least populated town in the entire State of Colorado. In 2020, only 16 people lived there!

Lakeside is located right next to the big City and County of Denver. The town is mostly made up of Lake Rhoda and the famous Lakeside Amusement Park.

History of Lakeside

Lakeside was officially created on November 25, 1907. A group of business people, led by a well-known Denver brewer named Adolph Zang, founded the town. They wanted to build a fun resort area just outside of Denver.

Why Lakeside Was Founded

The main reason Lakeside became a town was to get around Denver's rules about selling alcohol. By creating their own town, they could set their own laws. This allowed them to open the Lakeside Amusement Park in 1908. The park was nicknamed "White City" because of its bright lights.

Changes Over Time

In 1956, a shopping center called Lakeside Center was built near the lake. However, it didn't do very well financially. Around 2010, it was changed into a Walmart and a smaller shopping area. Today, the amusement park, the shopping area, and the lake take up almost all of this tiny town. Only a few houses exist in the southeast corner, where some park employees live.

Geography of Lakeside

Lakeside is a very small town. According to the United States Census Bureau, its total area is about 0.2 square miles (0.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but about 20% of it is water, which is Lake Rhoda.

Population Changes

The number of people living in Lakeside has changed a lot over the years. It started with 103 people in 1910. The population went down to just 8 people in 2010, but then it grew to 16 people by 2020. This makes it the smallest town in Colorado by population.
