Growing Up in Different Countries
Lalla Hirayama was born in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. She is the only child of a Japanese mother and a white South African father. Her father has Jewish heritage. Lalla once shared that she was raised in a traditional Japanese way. She mentioned thinking of "Samurais and Zen" when describing her upbringing. Her father, even though he is a white Jewish man, is also a sangoma, which is a traditional healer or shaman.
Lalla has often spoken about her diverse background. She grew up learning about different beliefs and cultures. These included Buddhism, Shinto, Judaism, and Christianity. She spent her early childhood years in Japan. After that, she moved to Australia. Finally, when she was about six years old, she moved to South Africa.
School Days and Early Talents
Lalla started her primary school at Fairways Primary School. This school is in Sandton, Johannesburg, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. During her primary school years, she enjoyed horse riding and athletics. In 1997, she even became a Junior Horse Riding Champion.

In 2005, Lalla began performing as a professional dancer. She danced at various company events and parties. A year later, in 2006, Hirayama started Clinch City Entertainment (ACC). This was a company focused on hip-hop marketing and events. In the same year, she became an official dancer for famous artists. She performed with groups like Skwatta Kamp. She also appeared in music videos for singers like Unathi Msengana and Loyiso Bala.
Television Career and Achievements
First Steps in Television
Lalla first appeared on South African TV screens when she was 15 years old. She was a presenter for the daily kids' show Craz-e on E-TV. After four years, Lalla was chosen to work for SABC1. She became a live presenter and a face for the channel.
A year later, she took on an acting role. She played 'Felicia' in the E-TV soap opera Rhythm City. She also appeared as a dark angel on the E-TV show Axe Dark Angels. During this time, she started presenting the show 'Scar Tissue' for the new DStv channel Vuzu. Soon after, she joined the popular live celebrity news show V Entertainment. While working on Vuzu, Lalla also played 'Bianca' in the soap opera 'Zone 14' on SABC1. A few months later, she joined the 'Tropika Island of Treasure' team. She co-hosted the third season of this show. It aired on E-TV and was filmed in Phuket, Thailand, with DJ Fresh. From mid-2011, she also co-hosted the hip-hop dance reality show 'Masters of Rhythm' on Vuzu.
Lalla has a very strong background in professional dance. She started classical training at age 4. She learned Ballet, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, Spanish, and Jazz dance.
