Lam Bun-Ching (Chinese: 林品晶; Jyutping: Lam4 Ban2 Jing1; b. Macau, 1954) is a talented Chinese American composer, pianist, and conductor. She creates and performs music, leading orchestras and musical groups.
Early Life and Music Training
Lam Bun-Ching was born in Macau in 1954. She loved music from a young age. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in piano performance in 1976. She studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Later, she received a special scholarship. This allowed her to study at the University of California at San Diego. There, she focused on composing music. She learned from famous composers like Bernard Rands and Pauline Oliveros. She earned a Ph.D., which is a very high university degree.
Lam Bun-Ching's Career
In 1981, Lam Bun-Ching started teaching music. She joined the faculty at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. She taught there until 1986. She also worked as a "Composer-in-Residence" at Mills College in Oakland, California. This means she was a special composer who worked closely with the college.
In 1997, she was a visiting professor. She taught composition at Yale University and Bennington College in Vermont. Her music has been recorded by several record companies. These include CRI and Tzadik. Today, Lam Bun-Ching spends her time living and working in both Paris and New York.
Musical Works
Lam Bun-Ching has created many musical pieces. One of her notable works is a chamber opera. An opera is a play where the story is told through music and singing.
