The Story of Lamar
Lamar was named after an important person in history, Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar. He was a writer and a politician from Mississippi. He wrote the Mississippi Ordinance of Secession. This was a document where Mississippi decided to leave the United States before the American Civil War. Lucius Lamar also served as a U.S. senator.
Lamar was first located in Marshall County. But when Benton County was created, the town moved. It moved about two miles east to be closer to the railroad. Lamar used to have its own school. A post office first opened in Lamar in 1837.
