Lamar Neagle (born May 7, 1987) is an American professional soccer player. He plays for the Tacoma Stars in the Major Arena Soccer League. Lamar spent most of his career with the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer. He also played for other teams like Montreal Impact and D.C. United. He even played for Mariehamn in Finland.
Lamar Neagle's Soccer Journey
Early Life and High School Soccer
Lamar Neagle went to Thomas Jefferson High School. He was a key player for three years. In his senior year, he helped his team win the State 4A championship. He also set a school record by scoring six goals in one game! The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper chose him for their High School All-Star Team. When he was younger, Lamar played for the Norpoint Soccer Club's Chivas team. His coach there was Wade Webber.
College Soccer Career
After high school, Lamar played college soccer at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). He was chosen for the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team three times. Lamar played almost every game during his four years at UNLV. He was the top scorer for his team in his last two seasons, scoring 9 goals each year. In 2008, he was named to the second team All-Far-West Region. While in college, he also played for the Des Moines Menace team. He played 24 games and scored six goals for them.
Playing for Seattle Sounders FC
Lamar Neagle first tried out for the Seattle Sounders FC team in 2009. He played in two trial games and helped with two goals. After finishing college, he came back to train with the team. On June 10, 2009, the Sounders officially signed him. Coach Sigi Schmid said Lamar was a fast player who could play in many positions. He was the fourth player from Washington state to join the Sounders.
Lamar was on the team roster for some big games, but he sat on the bench. He played in a friendly game against Chelsea on July 18, 2009. He said it felt "surreal" to play against a famous English team.
Moving to Other Teams
The Sounders let Lamar go on November 25, 2009. He then signed with Charleston Battery in 2010. He made his first professional game appearance on April 17, 2010. After the 2010 season, Lamar moved to IFK Mariehamn in Finland.
Return to Seattle Sounders FC
After playing in Finland, Lamar came back to the Sounders on March 2, 2011. In 2011, he played often as a substitute or a starter in MLS games. He also played important roles in the US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League. On August 27, 2011, Lamar scored three goals in one game for the Sounders. This was the first time a Sounders player scored a "hat-trick" at home in an MLS game. They won 6–2 against the Columbus Crew.
Time with Montreal Impact
On February 18, 2012, Lamar was traded to Montreal Impact. He scored his first goal for Montreal against his old team, the Sounders FC. On August 18, 2012, he scored another goal against the San Jose Earthquakes. This goal was chosen as the AT&T Goal of the Week.
Second Return to the Sounders
On January 27, 2013, the Sounders traded to get Lamar back for his third time with the team.
Playing for D.C. United
Lamar was traded to D.C. United on December 7, 2015. He played his first game and scored his first goal for United on March 7, 2016. He played a total of 56 games for D.C. United, scoring 11 goals and helping with 6 assists.
Third Return to the Sounders
On August 7, 2017, D.C. United traded Lamar back to the Sounders for a fourth time. On November 19, 2018, the Sounders decided not to renew his contract.
Indoor Soccer Career
On March 8, 2019, Lamar Neagle signed with the Tacoma Stars. This team plays indoor soccer in the Major Arena Soccer League. He also joined the Federal Way Coaching staff for the 2019–20 season. He signed with the Tacoma Stars again in October 2019 and rejoined them on December 10, 2021.
Personal Life
Lamar's parents are John Brown and Bridget Neagle, and Frankie and Maria Lawson. He has five brothers and sisters: Shedrick, Jamaal, Tanisha, Daisia, and Jasmine. He married Natalie Hanley on February 15, 2014, in Woodinville.
