Lambert Sustris (around 1515-1520 to 1584) was a Dutch painter. He mostly worked in the city of Venice, Italy. People sometimes called him Alberto de Olanda, which means Albert of Holland.

Sustris was born in Amsterdam. He moved to Venice when he was over 40 years old. We don't know much about his early art training. He worked with the famous painter Titian, helping him paint landscapes in his artworks.

Life and Travels

Lambert Sustris traveled with Titian on important trips. They went to a city called Augsburg in 1548 and again from 1550 to 1551. During these trips, Sustris painted many portraits of people.

When he returned to Venice, Sustris was influenced by other artists. These included Parmigianino and Andrea Meldolla. Sustris also taught art to another painter named Girolamo Muziano.

Art Style and Influence

Sustris's paintings show a style called Mannerism. This was a popular art style in Europe during the 1500s. Mannerism often featured figures with long bodies and unusual poses. It was a step between the Renaissance and Baroque art styles.

Through his student Muziano, Sustris helped spread a new idea in art. This was the idea of using detailed landscapes as backgrounds for historical paintings. This style became popular in Rome in the mid-to-late 1500s.

Lambert Sustris had a son who also became a painter. His son's name was Friedrich Sustris.
