Exploring Tallmadge Township's Communities

Lamont: A Village with History

Lamont is a small village found on the north side of the Grand River. It was started way back in 1833 by two people named Harry and Zine Steele. For many years, it was known as Steele's Landing. This name came from the fact that boats would land there on the river.

In 1851, the Steeles planned out the village and called it "Middleville." This was because it was located right in the middle of two bigger cities: Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. However, the post office there kept the name Steele's Landing.

The name changed again in 1855. A man named Lamont Chubb from Grand Rapids offered to give the village a road scraper. In return, the community agreed to take his name! So, on July 2, 1856, the post office officially became Lamont. Today, Lamont has its own ZIP code, 49430, which is used for P.O. Box services.
