Lance Cameron Gunn, born on January 9, 1970, is a former American football player. He played as a defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Europe.
Early Life and High School Football
Lance Gunn grew up in a suburb east of Houston, Texas. He went to North Shore High School in Cloverleaf, Texas. While there, he played high school football, showing his skills early on.
College Football Star
Lance played college football at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. He spent his first year, 1988, as a "redshirt" player, meaning he practiced but didn't play in games. After that, he played for three seasons under coach David McWilliams. For his senior year in 1992, he played for coach John Mackovic.
In 1990, during his sophomore year, the Texas Longhorns team won the Southwest Conference. They finished the regular season ranked as the third-best team! Lance was chosen as an All-Southwest Conference player three times. In 1992, he was named an All-American safety, which is a big honor.
During his college career, Lance made 298 tackles. He also had six quarterback sacks. In 1991, he led his team with five interceptions. He also tied for the most blocked kicks in 1992. Lance graduated from the University of Texas in 1993 with a degree in marketing. In 2011, he was honored by being added to the Longhorn Hall of Honor.
Professional Football Career
Lance Gunn was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 1993 NFL draft. He was the seventh pick in the seventh round. He played one season for the Bengals, starting in eight games. However, he was later placed on the injured reserve list. The Bengals released him at the end of their training camp in 1994.
In 1995, the New Orleans Saints signed him during the offseason. But he was released by the team at the end of their training camp.
In 1996, Lance played for the Frankfurt Galaxy in the NFL Europe league. He even played with them in the World Bowl '96 championship game. His football career ended in 1997. This was after he bravely donated a kidney to his father, who was very ill.
