History of Laneville
Laneville began as a meeting point of roads in the 1880s. The town got its name because four "lanes" or roads crossed there. Wealthy people settled in this area because they liked the red soil. They encouraged others to move there too.
The town received its own post office in 1888. Philetus Williamson was the first postmaster. Laneville's post office is still open today. It is one of only 14 post offices operating in Rusk County since 1950.
In 1904, Laneville had 171 residents. By 1925, the population went down to 108 people. The population grew a lot in the early 1930s. This happened when the East Texas Oil Field was discovered nearby. The population boomed to 320 people, and there were 16 businesses.
This growth did not last forever. However, Laneville still had several stores, sawmills, and three churches. It also had a cotton gin. From the 1950s to 2000, the population stayed around 200. In 1990, there were ten businesses. By 2000, this number increased to 20 businesses.
