Mark DeWayne Moseley, born on March 12, 1948, is a famous American football player. He was a special kind of player called a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons! He played for several teams. These included the Philadelphia Eagles, the Houston Oilers, the Washington Redskins, and the Cleveland Browns.

Mark grew up in Livingston, Texas. He first played quarterback in college. Later, he switched to being a kicker. The Eagles picked him in the 1970 NFL draft. After playing for the Eagles and Oilers, he joined the Washington Redskins in 1974. He played with them for many years.

In 1982, Mark Moseley won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. This was a huge honor! He is the only player whose main job was kicking to ever win this award. He retired in 1986 after playing a few games for the Cleveland Browns.

Early Life and College Football

Mark Moseley grew up in Livingston, Texas. He played football at Livingston High School. After high school, he went to Texas A&M University. Then he attended Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA).

At both colleges, he played as a quarterback. But in his last year at SFA, he changed positions. He became a placekicker. In that season, he set new records for points in a game. He also set a record for field goals in a season.

Mark Moseley's NFL Journey

The Philadelphia Eagles chose Mark Moseley in the 1970 NFL draft. He was picked 346th overall. He played one season with the Eagles. Then he signed with the Houston Oilers. He played with them for two seasons.

After 1972, Mark was out of the NFL for two years. He moved back to Livingston, Texas. During this time, he worked installing septic systems. He also coached high school sports. He kept practicing his kicking. He even sent letters to many NFL teams.

In 1974, the Washington Redskins signed him. This was a big chance for him.

Kicking Style and Unique Record

Mark Moseley was one of the last kickers to use a "straight on" style. This means he approached the ball directly. Most kickers today use a "soccer-style" kick. They approach the ball at an angle. This modern style was introduced in the 1960s.

In the 1982 season, Mark had an amazing year. He made 20 out of 21 field goals. This was a record at the time. He also scored 76 points for his team. Because of his great performance, he won the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award. He was the first pure placekicker to ever win it!

Super Bowl Success and More Records

Even though he had some tough moments in the playoffs, Mark helped his team win. In Super Bowl XVII, the Washington Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins. Mark kicked two field goals and three extra points. He was a key part of their victory.

In the next season (1983), Mark led the NFL in scoring. He scored 161 points! He also kicked the game-winning field goal. This happened in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. It was a very exciting win.

End of His Career

In 1986, the Washington Redskins released Mark Moseley. He was 38 years old. He is still their all-time leading scorer. He scored 1,207 points for the Redskins.

He then signed with the Cleveland Browns. He played a few games with them. He helped them win a playoff game. He kicked a game-winning field goal in double overtime! Mark retired at the end of that season.

Throughout his career, Mark Moseley made 300 field goals. He also made 482 extra points. In total, he scored 1,382 points. He led the NFL in field goals made four times.

Life After Football

After his football career, Mark Moseley owned two restaurants in Virginia. Later, he became a director for Five Guys Enterprises. This company is famous for its burgers.

Mark has five children and 13 grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with his family.
