Early Life and Football Start
Mark Moseley grew up in Livingston, Texas. He played football at Livingston High School. After high school, he went to Texas A&M University and then Stephen F. Austin State University.
At first, he played quarterback in college. But in his last year at Stephen F. Austin, he changed to being a placekicker. This was a big change that led to his future career.
Professional Football Career
Mark Moseley was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970 NFL draft. He played one season with them. Then, he played two seasons with the Houston Oilers. After that, he was out of football for two years. During this time, he worked installing septic systems and coached high school sports. He kept practicing his kicking, hoping to return to the NFL.
In 1974, the Washington Redskins signed him. This was a big break for him. He played for the Redskins until 1986.
Kicking Style
Mark Moseley was one of the last NFL kickers to use the "straight on" kicking style. This means he approached the ball straight and kicked it with his toe. Most kickers today use the "soccer-style" kick. This is where they approach the ball at an angle and kick it with the side of their foot. This style was introduced in the 1960s and is now used by almost all kickers.
MVP Season and Super Bowl Win
The 1982 NFL season was shorter than usual because of a player strike. But Mark Moseley had an amazing year. He made 20 out of 21 field goals, which was a very high success rate. He scored 76 points that season.
Because of his great performance, he won the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award. This was a huge achievement. He was the first pure kicker to ever win this award.
In Super Bowl XVII, the Washington Redskins played the Miami Dolphins. Moseley kicked two field goals and made all three of his extra point attempts. The Redskins won the game 27–17, making Moseley a Super Bowl champion.
Later Career and Retirement
In the 1983 season, Moseley continued to play well. He led the NFL in scoring with 161 points. He also kicked the game-winning field goal in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
In 1986, Moseley was released by the Redskins. He is still their all-time leading scorer with 1,207 points. He then signed with the Cleveland Browns for a few games. He helped the Browns win a playoff game with a game-winning field goal in double overtime. He retired at the end of that season.
Throughout his career, Mark Moseley made 300 field goals and 482 extra points. He scored a total of 1,382 points. He led the NFL in field goals made four times.
