The Lapins cherry is a popular type of cherry fruit. It's also sometimes called 'Cherokee'. This special cherry is a mix of two other cherry types: the Van and Stella. It's so good that it even won an award called the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit!

The Story of Lapins Cherries

The Lapins cherry was created in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. This happened at a place called the Summerland Research Station.

A scientist named Karlis O. Lapins helped create this cherry. He was from Latvia. Mr. Lapins did important work on cherry trees that could grow fruit by themselves. This is called being self-fertile.

Even though the Lapins cherry was released in 1983, after Mr. Lapins had retired, it was named after him to honor his work.

What Lapins Cherry Trees Are Like

Lapins cherry trees usually grow to be about 2.5 to 4 meters (8 to 13 feet) tall. They also spread out about the same distance.

These trees have lots of green leaves. Their branches grow in a way that helps them produce many cherries. Like the Stella cherry, the Lapins cherry tree is self-fertile. This means it can produce fruit without needing pollen from another cherry tree. It's also great at helping other cherry types grow fruit by sharing its pollen.

What Lapins Cherries Are Like

People think Lapins cherries are very good quality. They turn a deep red color even before they are ready to pick. Unlike some other cherries, they taste sweet while they are still red.

Lapins cherries ripen later in the season. They are usually ready about two weeks after the Bing cherry. These cherries are also known for being strong and not splitting easily.
