Lapoinya (pronounced La-poin-ya) is a small town in Tasmania, Australia. It's located on the north-west coast, west of a larger town called Wynyard. The name "Lapoinya" comes from the Tasmanian Aboriginal language and means "fern tree." You can find many fern trees in the untouched parts of the local rainforests. In 2006, about 368 people lived in Lapoinya.
About Lapoinya
Lapoinya is mainly an agricultural area. This means people here grow crops and raise animals. The town started to develop for business around the year 1900.
A Look at Its Past
For a long time, Lapoinya was important for several things:
- Forestry: This means cutting down trees for wood.
- Mixed agriculture: This includes growing different kinds of crops. Potatoes were a very important crop here.
- Grazing: This is raising animals like dairy cattle (cows that produce milk) on grassy fields.
The Lapoinya Post Office opened on November 1, 1912. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The Post Office closed in 1970.
Protecting the Forests
In November 2014, the people of Lapoinya faced a challenge. They wanted to stop a company called Forestry Tasmania from cutting down trees in the forests around their town.
This led to protests in January 2016. People gathered to show they wanted to protect the forests. They believed these forests were very important and should not be logged.
