Larry Sanders' Early Life and Education
Larry Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents were Dorothy and Eli Sanders. His father, Eli, was a Jewish immigrant from Poland. His family was tragically killed during the Holocaust, a terrible event where many Jewish people were murdered. Larry's mother, Dorothy, was born in New York City to Jewish immigrant parents from Poland and Russia.
His father came to America in 1921 when he was 17. He worked hard selling paint to support his family. Larry remembers that his family always had enough food and clothes. However, big purchases like new curtains or a rug were difficult to afford. Both Larry and his younger brother, Bernie, went to James Madison High School in Brooklyn. Larry has said that they were young people who wanted to change things after World War II.
Larry attended Brooklyn College in New York. He later earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. He also studied at Harvard Law School in the 1950s. He left after two years to care for his sick mother. He returned much later, after 35 years, and finished his law degree in 1994.
In 1968 or 1969, Larry moved to the United Kingdom. He became a university lecturer. He taught first at the University of West London and then at Oxford University. He taught in the Department of Social Administration.
Larry has a son named Jacob Edward "Jake" Sanders, who was born in 1968. Jake also became involved in politics. He was elected to the Oxford City Council in 2000. He also ran as a Green Party candidate for Parliament in 2005.
Larry Sanders' Political Journey
Larry Sanders was active in the Labour Party in Oxford during the 1980s. However, he left the party in 2001. He felt that the party had changed its ideas too much under its leader, Tony Blair. He then joined the Green Party.
In 2005, Larry was elected as a Green Party county councillor. He represented the East Oxford area in the Oxfordshire County Council. He served in this role until 2013, when he decided to retire from the Council. While he was a councillor, he focused mainly on services for social and health care.
In October 2005, he resigned from the board of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. He did this because he was worried that planned cuts to services would put people who needed help at greater risk. He felt it was important to take a stand.
In September 2009, Larry became the Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Oxford Community School. The previous chairman and six other board members had resigned. In December 2009, the government department for schools decided to replace the Board of Governors. Larry said he was "dreadfully disappointed" by this decision.
In February 2016, Larry Sanders was chosen as the Health Spokesperson for the Green Party of England and Wales. He held this important role until May 2021.
Larry was also chosen as a delegate for his brother, Bernie Sanders, at the 2016 Democratic National Convention in the United States. He spoke at the convention in July 2016. He was very emotional as he announced his vote for his brother. In 2019, he was a candidate for the Greens in the South East England area during the 2019 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom.
