Lars Roberg (born 1664, died 1742) was an important Swedish doctor and scientist. He taught anatomy and medicine at Uppsala University. He helped many students learn about the human body and how to treat illnesses.

Early Life and Education

Lars Roberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden. His father, Daniel Roberg, was a royal apothecary. An apothecary was like a pharmacist who prepared medicines.

Lars started studying at Uppsala University when he was very young, in 1675. In 1680, he traveled to other countries. He visited Germany, France, and England. During his travels, he studied at important universities. These included the University of Wittenberg and the University of Leiden. He earned his highest medical degree in Leiden in 1693.

Teaching and Mentoring

In 1697, Lars Roberg became a professor at Uppsala University. He taught anatomy and practical medicine. He kept this important teaching job until 1740.

Roberg was a teacher to some very famous scientists. Two of his most well-known students were Carl Linnaeus and Peter Artedi. Linnaeus later became famous for naming plants and animals. Artedi was known for his work on fish.

Founding a Medical Clinic

Lars Roberg wanted medical students to get hands-on experience. So, in 1708, he started a special clinic. This clinic helped students practice what they learned.

The clinic was called Nosocomium academicum. It was located in Uppsala. Later, this clinic became part of the larger Uppsala University Hospital. This shows how important his work was for medical training.

A Member of the Royal Academy

In 1739, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was created. This was a group for top scientists in Sweden. Lars Roberg was one of the very first people chosen to join this important academy. He passed away in Uppsala in 1742.
