Las Guijas is a small place in Pima County, Arizona, in the United States. It's what we call a "populated place." This means people live there, but it's not an official town or city with its own local government. It sits about 3,451 feet (1,052 meters) above sea level, which is quite high up!
What's in a Name?
The name "Las Guijas" comes from Spanish words that mean "the rubble" or "the pebbles." This name was given by Spanish miners back in the 1800s. They were looking for placer gold. This type of gold is found in loose bits, like tiny flakes or nuggets.
Where Was the Gold Found?
The miners found this gold in the gravels and conglomerates along the stream valleys. Gravel is made of small, loose stones. Conglomerate is a type of rock made from many different pebbles and stones cemented together. The miners called these areas "las guijas" because of all the rocky bits where the gold was hidden. The nearby Las Guijas Mountains also share this interesting name.
