Las Moras Springs (pronounced Lahs MOH-rahs) means "The Mulberries" in Spanish. These are a group of springs located near Brackettville in Kinney County, Texas.

What are Las Moras Springs?

Las Moras Springs are a natural source of water. They are found on the land of Fort Clark in Brackettville. The fort was built here because of these very springs.

How Big Are the Springs?

These springs are quite large! They are the ninth biggest group of springs in all of Texas. Every day, they release about 12 to 14 million gallons of water. That's a huge amount of water!

How Do the Springs Work?

The springs are called "artesian springs." This means water comes up from deep underground naturally. It rises because of pressure from rocks and the earth. The water comes from a crack in the ground, called a fault. This fault sits on top of a type of rock called Edwards limestone. The water emerges at about 1,096 feet above sea level.

What Happens to the Water?

The water from the springs first fills a large area with walls around it. Some of this water then flows into a big swimming pool. This pool is about 300 feet long. Any extra water goes into a special channel around the pool.

Below the pool, all the water comes together again. This combined water forms the very beginning of Las Moras Creek. This creek flows all year long. It eventually reaches the Rio Grande, a very important river.
