A Look Back: History of Las Palmas
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 647 people lived in Las Palmas barrio at that time.
