Lasana is a small village located in northern Chile. It's about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of the city of Calama. This village is special because it sits right next to the Loa River. Lasana is part of Chile's Antofagasta Region.

Discovering Lasana: A Historic Village

The main attraction in Lasana is an old fortress called Pukará de Lasana. This amazing structure was built a long time ago, in the 12th century. It's a great example of pre-Columbian architecture.

The Ancient Pukará Fortress

The Pukará de Lasana is located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of another village called San Francisco de Chiu Chiu. Because of its historical importance, the fortress was declared a national monument in 1982. This means it's protected and preserved for everyone to learn from and enjoy.

What is a Pukará?

The word Pukará comes from the Quechua language. It means "fortress." These fortresses were often built on hills or high places. They helped protect ancient communities.

Rock Art: Petroglyphs

Besides the fortress, you can also find Petroglyphs in the area around Lasana. Petroglyphs are ancient drawings carved into rocks. They give us clues about the people who lived here many centuries ago.
