The Lasionycta phaea is a type of moth. It is part of the Noctuidae family, which is a large group of moths. This particular moth is known for living in very cold places. It is an arctic species, meaning it thrives in the chilly northern parts of the world.

About the Lasionycta Phaea Moth

This moth is quite unique because of where it lives. It has been found in many northern areas. These include Baffin Island in north-eastern Canada. You can also find it in the central Brooks Range in northern Alaska. Its habitat stretches south along the west coast of Hudson Bay to Arviat, Nunavut.

Daily Life of the Moth

Unlike many moths that fly at night, the Lasionycta phaea is a diurnal species. This means it is active during the day. You can often spot these moths flying around when the sun is out. They prefer to live on wet tundra. Tundra is a type of flat, treeless land found in very cold regions. It often has permafrost (permanently frozen ground) beneath the surface.

When to See Them

Adult Lasionycta phaea moths have a specific time when they are flying. They are usually "on wing" from late June to mid-July. This short period is when they are most active. During this time, they search for mates and lay eggs. This allows their young to develop before the harsh winter returns.
